 Coping After the Disaster

Disasters can have a traumatic effect on anyone, but this is especially true for children.  Individuals can begin to show temporary behavioral changes.

Some ways to help:

-          Help calm fears by acknowledging concerns and perceptions.

-          Encourage people to talk about their feelings.

-          Reestablish daily routines as soon as possible.

-          After a disaster children are most concerned it will happen again or they will be separated from their family.

-          Discuss your planning so everyone will have a sense of security.

Callers also may receive referrals from a national database of community resources to help them with specific concerns, such as financial and legal issues. The service is free, and will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for as long as necessary.
