BASIC LAWN CARE |
|
||||||||
|
Our nursery partners are proud to present one of the easiest, most inexpensive complete lawn care programs available.
The 4-Season Lawn Care Program offers all of the nutrients your lawn needs throughout the growing season. It’s easy to apply and easy to remember. Each application is made on or near the four major warm-weather holidays; Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
Of course, all of the steps listed below are approximate. So check with our experts for specific timing in your area.
Step 1 - Easter/Early Spring: Crabgrass Perventer Plus Since Easter can occur as early as March 22 or as late as April 25, a good rule of thumb is to apply this product in early to-mid spring, or when forsythia are in bloom. It stops growth of ugly crabgrass and gives your lawn a boost of extended-feeding nitrogen.
Step 2 - Memorial Day: Weed & Feed Apply a weed control that fights dandelions and other actively growing weeds. Slow release nitrogen provides a steady food supply for long lasting greening.
Step 3 - July 4th: Lawn Fertilizer Look for a premium blend of nutrients that contains slow release iron and sulfur to give your lawn extra greening power and provide it with needed nourishment to help it through the hottest part of the summer.
Step 4 - Labor Day: Fall Lawn Fertilizer An application of Fall Lawn Fertilizer will green your lawn now plus allow it to store food that will be used for growth early next spring, allowing a faster green-up. High potassium content strengthens your lawn, giving it cold hardiness to help it withstand the winter.
That’s all there is to it. Four quick and easy feedings that provide your lawn the best possible care! Of course there are other factors that can cause problems, like lawn disease.
Diseases in lawns are generally a result of many factors. The overall condition of the lawn (presence of weeds and thatch), the care it has received (watering, mowing and feeding) and weather conditions (excessive rainfall, drought, temperature) all enter into the picture.
There are a variety of methods gardeners use to deal with lawn diseases, prevention being the easiest. Don’t provide a good environment for diseases to develop, and they usually won’t. Fusarium blight syndrome, dollar spot, leaf spot and brown patch are common lawn diseases and are caused by fungi.
Brown to yellow patches of varying shapes and sizes are generally signs of lawn disease. When looking closer at grass blades, you may see tan to brown spots or sections. If you suspect a disease has invaded your lawn, bring a sample of the affected area into our store. An expert will be happy to diagnose the problem for you. Often, diseases can be kept under control simply by limiting the time grass blades are wet and by practicing proper lawn maintenance.
Fertilize correctly. The amount of nitrogen the grass receives is a large factor in lawn disease control. Too much or too little nitrogen stresses grass plants, making them a target for fungi. Leaf spot is encouraged by excess nitrogen in spring. Dollar spot is frequently present when lawns are hungry for nitrogen. Use the 4-Season Lawn Care Program and you’ll provide your lawn with the proper amounts of nutrients at the correct times all through the growing season.
Sometimes, a great remedy is to re-seed or overseed the lawn with grasses more resistant to the disease. Add in resistant varieties of Perennial Ryegrass or Kentucky Bluegrass to reduce the chance of disease.
Sometimes additional measures must be taken if diseases invade your lawn. Use fungicides to control and/or prevent a wide range of lawn diseases. Usually both granular and liquid varieties are available for such controls. |
